F.P. Journe Octa Réserve de Marche Platinum 38MM, Early Brass Movement

The Octa Réserve de Marche represents an important chapter in the history of F.P. Journe. Introduced in the early 2000s, the Octa became the Maison’s first automatic wristwatch and was conceived around an exceptional 120-hour power reserve. This example is housed in a classical 38MM platinum case, distinguished by Journe’s signature flat, rope-patterned crown. The case is paired with sapphire crystals on both the front and back, allowing the character of this early independent watchmaking creation to be appreciated from every angle.

The delicately textured white-gold dial is arranged with the clarity that has become synonymous with F.P. Journe. A separate silver guilloché sub-dial displays the hours and minutes, while the subsidiary seconds sit prominently below. The signature “Invenit et Fecit” inscription reinforces the watchmaker’s philosophy of invention and craftsmanship. A large date aperture occupies the upper portion of the dial, while the 120-hour power-reserve indicator is positioned between 8 and 9 o’clock, creating a distinctive and highly legible composition.

At the heart of this early Octa is F.P. Journe’s automatic Calibre 1300, constructed in rhodium-plated brass and decorated with Côtes de Genève finishing. The movement incorporates 32 jewels, a shock-absorber mechanism, straight-line lever escapement and a monometallic four-arm balance with four timing weights adjusted in five positions. Its self-compensating free-sprung flat balance spring and off-centre bidirectional 22-carat gold guilloché rotor demonstrate the technical ambition of Journe’s early automatic movements. The calibre is engraved with “Exclusive Power Reserve System” and “Precision Chronometer.”

Early brass-movement F.P. Journe watches are particularly prized by collectors for their rarity and historical importance. The manufacture moved toward 18-carat gold movements in 2004, making these earlier brass examples representative of a short but formative period in the brand’s development. The Octa Réserve de Marche therefore offers more than an exceptional complication: it preserves an important piece of François-Paul Journe’s early independent watchmaking history, combining traditional horological aesthetics with an innovative automatic architecture.
