Parisian Design Icons with a Deep Watchmaking Heritage
Cartier was founded in Paris in 1847 and became internationally known for jewelry, objects and watches shaped by a strong design culture. Timepieces appear in the Maison's records from the 19th century, but its influence on wristwatch design became especially important in the early 20th century.
In 1904, Louis Cartier created a wristwatch for his friend, Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, so he could read the time while flying without reaching for a pocket watch. The resulting Santos became one of the early purpose-designed men's wristwatches and remains a cornerstone of Cartier watchmaking.
The Tank followed in 1917, establishing a geometric design language that has endured for more than a century. Later families including Panthère and Ballon Bleu expanded Cartier's watch vocabulary, but the common thread remains the same: recognisable proportions, refined details and a distinctly Parisian approach to form.
