Patek Philippe

Geneva Watchmaking, Family Ownership and Generations of Complications

Patek Philippe began in Geneva in 1839, when Antoine Norbert de Patek co-founded Patek, Czapek & Cie. After meeting gifted watchmaker Jean Adrien Philippe, inventor of an important keyless winding and setting system, Patek formed the partnership that ultimately became Patek Philippe.

The Stern family acquired the company in 1932 and has remained its steward ever since. That same year saw the launch of the Ref. 96 Calatrava, whose clean round design became one of the defining expressions of the Patek Philippe style. The manufacture is also renowned for complicated watches, from perpetual calendars and chronographs to minute repeaters and grand complications.

Patek Philippe's modern collection spans classical and sporting designs. The Nautilus debuted in 1976, the Aquanaut followed in 1997, and the Cubitus collection arrived in 2024 with a new square-shaped interpretation of sporty elegance. Across these families, the brand continues to emphasise limited production, hand-finishing and long-term continuity.
