Rolex traces its origins to 1905, when Hans Wilsdorf founded a London company specialising in the distribution of timepieces. Convinced that wristwatches could be both elegant and dependable, Wilsdorf made chronometric precision, durability and practical everyday use central to the brand's development.
Two breakthroughs became foundations of modern Rolex watchmaking: the waterproof Oyster wristwatch introduced in 1926 and the self-winding Perpetual rotor patented in 1931. Those ideas shaped the Oyster Perpetual family and helped establish the brand's reputation for robust mechanical watches designed for real-world use.
Collections including the Datejust, Submariner, GMT-Master and Cosmograph Daytona have become enduring references in luxury watchmaking. Today, Rolex continues to test completed watches to its own Superlative Chronometer standard, combining chronometric precision with water resistance, self-winding performance and long-term reliability.
