The Richard Mille RM 27-05 Rafael Nadal is the lightest manual winding tourbillon ever created. It is also the most shock-resistant. Limited to 80 pieces worldwide and priced at USD 1,150,000, the RM 27-05 isn’t a watch for collectors who merely want something pricey. This is a watch for individuals who know precisely what it means to conjure together a working, accurate, hand wound tourbillon that weighs less than two sheets of A4 paper.
The Partnership That Built a Record
In 2008, Richard Mille first contacted Rafael Nadal. Back then, Nadal had never worn anything on his wrist during a match. The concept that a mechanical timepiece might survive a professional tennis swing – with g-forces surpassing 1,000 g at ball impact – appeared technically preposterous.
“I remember the day in 2008 when Richard got in touch with me to talk about possibly working together,” Nadal said. Never having worn anything on my wrist, it seemed unfathomable to me. Everything fell into place in 2010, when he came to visit me in Mallorca. And at that point, I did what you might expect. He handed up a prototype of the RM 027, a watch with spectacular lines, but surprisingly light.
The RM 027, that first watch, weighed just 13 grams. “Each new model has taken us further. Moreover, the RM 27-05 project itself started in 2019, drawing inspiration from the successes of the preceding models in terms of lightness and performance. This watch was developed for five years and holds simultaneously two world records, being the lightest and most shock-resistant tourbillon manual winding ever created.
Carbon TPT B.4: A Material Built Over Five Years

The case of the RM 27-05 is manufactured from an all new composite material: Carbon TPT B.4. This is not usual! Carbon TPT It’s an evolution that has been purpose-built, developed over five years particularly for this watch in partnership with Swiss composite experts North Thin Ply Technology (NTPT).
Carbon TPT B.4 is “4% denser, with 15% stiffer fibre and 30% stronger resin,” says Richard Mille, than the equivalent carbon composites used in earlier watches. The hundreds of layers of parallel carbon filaments (not more than 50 microns across) are impregnated with high-performance resin and the orientation is altered between layers. The composite is then heated to 120°C under 6 bars pressure, and machined.
These features have an important practical consequence. Carbon TPT B.4 can be machined to a thinner cross-section than earlier composites, while yet holding its robustness and strength. This means that the case walls can be thinned out to a thinner cross section, reducing the overall weight, without compromising the structural integrity. The finished case maintains the trademark layered surface design, which gives the RM 27-05 its distinctive dark, striated feel.
The Monobloc Case: No Screws, No Compromise

The construction of the RM 27-05 enclosure is as singular as its material. Most Richard Mille watches consist of a three part case construction comprising bezel, centre and caseback. The RM 27-05 does away with this completely.
This is a monobloc watch – the centre and rear case are milled from a single piece. Held in place without screws, the flange and bezel grip the calibre snug in place, directly inside the case. This method does away with all of the screws usually used to attach the caseback, reducing both their weight and the potential weak spots under extreme load.
A structural concept taken straight from aerospace engineering where the skin of an aircraft adds to the overall stiffness of the frame and vice versa, adding to the rigidity of the casing.
The Flying Tourbillon: Rose Gold Against Carbon

The RM 27-05 is powered by the RMUP-01 calibre, a manual winding movement with a flying tourbillon at 6 o’clock. A flying tourbillon is one that has no upper bridge to hold the tourbillon cage. Instead, it is cantilevered from a single point of attachment below, giving it the appearance of floating freely. This reduces parts and weight accordingly.
At 6 o’clock, a one-minute flying tourbillon, without an upper bridge, shows Richard Mille’s skill in creating complications with minimal weight. The tourbillon cage is made of 5N PVD-treated rose gold, which produces the warm gold tone that you can see in your photos against the dark titanium baseplate – one of the most visually striking contrasts in the entire RM 27 series.

The barrel is also finished in rose gold and sits at around 11 o’clock, featuring an open-spoke wheel architecture that reduces its own weight and allows the coiled mainspring to be seen. The calibre is entirely hand-finished on the front and invisible on the back. Micro-blasting, polishing, bevelling and circular finishing on the involute profile wheels testify to the brand’s will to offer a movement that is formidable from both a mechanical and aesthetic standpoint.
The movement beats at 3 Hz or 21,600 vibrations per hour and has a power reserve of approximately 55 hours. The baseplate and bridges are crafted from microblasted, PVD-treated grade 5 titanium, a biocompatible, highly corrosion-resistant and extremely rigid alloy, so the gear train can run smoothly.
11.5 Grams and 14,000 G: Two World Records Explained

The RM 27-05 has two entries in the record books. The first weighs 11.5 grams. The RM 27-05 Flying Tourbillon Rafael Nadal weighs just 11.5 grams without its strap – about the same as two sheets of A4 printer paper. This makes it the lightest manual winding tourbillon watch ever created in the world.
The second number is fourteen thousand. The RM 27-05 is able to endure a g-force of more than 14,000 g’s. By way of comparison a jet will generate about 8g, a serious car crash about 50g and a tennis racquet hitting a ball about 1,000g. The RM 27-05 is capable of withstanding 14 times the stress of a tennis swing, so it’s safe to say Nadal could wear it into competition without a worry — and he did.
Never before has a Richard Mille watch been so severely validated. 3D simulations on deformation and tomographic studies of the watch after multiple shock phases up to 5,000g confirmed that the RM 27-05 is a symbol of pure performance.
The Dial and Crystal: Lightness Over Luxury

The RM 27-05 has a completely open dial. There is no background, no base plate, no decoration which is not also a functional part. The gear train, the bridges, the tourbillon cage, the barrel, all visible at the same time. Applied indices around the chapter ring give basic hour markers, while partially skeletonised hands sweep the dial without adding unnecessary mass.
The crystal is plastic, a PMMA polymer with an anti-scratch coating, not a heavier, traditional sapphire. This is not a price concession. It’s an intentional engineering choice. Sapphire is hard, but it adds measurable weight. PMMA polymer is the right material choice on a watch where every milligram counts. Furthermore, for everyday use, its anti-scratch coating solves the main practical disadvantage of polymer over sapphire.
On the Wrist: Presence Beyond Its Weight

The RM 27-05 is much thinner and more compact than most Richard Mille references, measuring 37.25 x 47.25mm and only 7.2mm thick. Compact and strong – 37.25mm x 47.25mm x 7.2mm in a tonneau shape – like Nadal himself, who has always won through athleticism rather than overwhelming physical size.
The watch is lightweight but packs a big statement on your wrist. The orange textile strap – a bold colourway that reflects the clay courts of Roland Garros where Nadal won fourteen French Open titles – complements the dark Carbon TPT B.4 case in what is immediately recognisable. The watch is flat and close to the skin on the wrist, so it feels less like a mechanical object and more like a natural extension of the arm.
The Rose Gold Detail: Where Engineering Meets Artistry

The only concession to pure aesthetics is the decision to finish the barrel and tourbillon cage in 5N rose gold. The rest of this watch is all there because it needs to be. The rose gold is purely decorative, it doesn’t serve any function other than making the watch look pretty.

The eye is stopped by the warm rose gold of the barrel and tourbillon cage against the dark titanium baseplate and layered black carbon case. The only stylistic concession is the addition of lines on two prominent bridges that mirror the V shape of the tourbillon. These V-shaped bridges are a reflection of the geometry of the tourbillon cage and the angular spirit of the overall RM 27-05 design language.
